So as you all know I am a huge foodie. I always have been and I love the idea of pairing my food with my fashion. There something fabulous about the food and fashion combo. It’s like wine and a good aged cheese. Anyways, I am currently a culinary student at the Art Institute of Houston and exploring restaurants is key for a lot of my assignments. Lucky for me, my friend Syreeta is always willing to join me on food adventures. Every month we take turns choosing a new restaurant. The month July was my choice and I went for Underbelly.
I made reservations through Open Table, it was quick and easy. We arrived and the atmosphere was very glam rustic. It seems to be also a wine bar with ability to allow its guest to purchase a bottle of wine to go if they wish. The glam rustic theme kind of marries into the wine cellar making you feel like you are somewhere in Santa Rosa, CA. It literally feels like you are in a kitchen/wine cellar/dining room combination kind of space(hope that makes sense). Dress code, I would say definitely slack for the gentlemen and heels for the ladies.
Now to the food, Underbelly is owned by Chef Chris Shepherd (AIH alumni), he is known for adjusting his menu to whatever the local food market has to offer and serving unique dishes. If I have to describe him and his restaurant in a few words it would be “serving HOUSTON on a silver platter.”.

So as Syreeta and I enjoyed every bite and basked in the glory of this beautiful restaurant, we were oblivious to the fact that Chef Shepherd himself was watching us. When it was time for dessert, our wonderful waiter asked us to join us in the back because the Chef wanted to have a word with us. At first, we were a little startled, we wondered if we offended anyone with our giggles and picture taking.
That wasn’t the case, Chef Shepherd was charming and very welcoming. He gave us a tour of his restaurant and for not one second we took that privilege for granted, You see Syreeta and I truly love food so we felt like we have just won the lottery.
After a full tour of the restaurant then came dessert. We were not disappointed and he sent us one on the house and of course, it was an honor to have an award winning Chef choose a dish for us . It was a magical night for us haha.
Houston is filled with gems and Underbelly is exactly that. Chef Shepherd a James Beard award winning Chef has brought his culinary worldly experiences to the city and married it to the raw rich Houston culture. He is making dishes picked from our own backyard and reminding the rest of the world that H-town is in the culinary world to stay.
